Becoming a sponsor is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself and those you sponsor. The relationship between sponsor and a member is a very structured one, one where you can work on your own relationship skills and business skills. Some of the skills you will develop as a sponsor are acceptance, being emotionally present for someone else, listening, and learning new and innovative ways to market your online business with others!

Many of us have great difficulty showing care and support without either trying to control the situation or becoming a doormat. Sponsorship can provide you a great way to experience caring support within a structured framework. In addition to developing your own relationship skills, being a sponsor will help you to a better understanding of your friendships with your members and your business! Being a good sponsor will provide you with long term friends and long term business!

Understand what it means to accept your position as a sponsor to others. Explaining the concept of a business to someone else may reveal new meanings to you. You may find that in order to answer a members questions, you may have to spend some time studying those strategies and tips you've used in your business and your success for the answers ...this can only help you and your member(s)!

Sponsoring someone helps you by:

* Giving back that which you have been given -
* Building relationships on mutual trust -
* Helping someone who is trying to change his or her life and if it happens, seeing that person change ...seeing them succeed!
* Teaching and learning new things about online marketing together -

Who can be a sponsor? Almost anyone can sponsor another person. After all, the very first online marketing business opportunity did not necessarily have lots of people with years of online experience who could serve as sponsors for its members. In fact, you may find that although others have owned or worked in offline business, they are now learning a new way to work a business online and with all the conveniences of working from home! They will remember you as having been a great sponsor!

In general, we all at some time or another have been attending workshops, webinars, reading, listening to training CD's or watching DVD's of already successful people in the industry, listening to company training calls and working the business ourselves before we start to sponsor someone else. We may not have finished learning some things, but we will always continue to learn new things about online marketing and business opportunities! Online marketing is a never ending journey!

If you are farther along than your member(s), you have experience to offer that person, and in turn they have things to offer you, that you may not even thought about in your daily business or success!

The main quality that a sponsor needs is a commitment and dedication, honesty and ethics in working their business and helping others do the same. After all, the job of the sponsor is to help their member(s) learn everything that will assist them in accomplishing their goals in their chosen online marketing venture. Above all be loyal to yourself and ...be loyal to your members!

Beyond that, all you really need to sponsor someone is a willingness to listen to that person and to give feedback as passionately as possible. Help that person learn their business ...may be the same one you are involved in, it may not! None the less, you are helping someone else and they will remember that. This does a lot to help your credibility as you grow in your success in online marketing!

How does one give feedback? Giving feedback does not mean giving unsolicited advice; it does not mean threatening, bullying, or insulting others! What it does mean is sharing your experiences, strengths, talents and skills in a way that is always helpful to others. Think of how you would want to be treated if the shoe was on the other foot! Do you think you would listen to a sponsor if they always put down your experiences, ideas and suggestions?

What is the role of the sponsor? Your role as a sponsor is to guide your member(s) through the steps of online marketing, answering questions, and sharing your own experiences. Often you can help a member by sharing the lessons you have learned from your past sponsors, coaches and/or mentors, and by listening to other people at calls or online meetings. Learn what you need to, you never know when you may be asked to be a guest speaker and assist in teaching others what you know!

Listen to your member(s) as objectively as you can, striving to frame what you hear and the feedback you give in terms of online marketing and other marketing tools. What you hear from your member(s) may be something you have never even thought of, then you have the opportunity to add that knowledge into your personal business talents and skills.

You are your member's friend. Develop long term friendships first, then introduce your prospects to new ventures. Develop your role as a mentor and teacher, someone who doesn't necessarily take the side of the member, but always tries to gives the member a new way of looking at his or her online marketing business. Be available and there to help when you are needed! Observe those things in conversation that will assist you in being a better sponsor!

Some sponsors like to ask a new member to call them every day for a set period of time. This serves two purposes: it allows you to assess how seriously the member is about working their business and it gets the member in the habit of calling you to check in on new marketing strategies, tips and general learning about their business ...and yours! Always remember to keep business ...business! There will always be time at the end of the day to talk about other things. Be open to your member(s) ideas and suggestions too!

We hate confrontation. How can you tell your member something that might make them angry? Your feedback is just that: feedback. Whether or not the member is angered by the feedback is up to him or her and the way they've learned (or not) to handle it. What you are trying to accomplish is to help your member(s) learn and implement into their business and daily regimens those things that will help them be successful!

Some member's may take a long time to “get” the basics of online marketing, and or the particular business opportunity they've joined. And sometimes a member will get angry about some feedback because it strikes close to home on something they may not be ready to handle. Try not to get personal or take anothers anger or frustration personally. Remember your role and their role is a partnership ...the idea is for everyone to benefit from success!

Your job as sponsor is simply to keep reminding the member that their business IS their business and that you are there to help them. Believe it or not, that member believes and trusts you, they are leaning on you to help them in learning everything they need to in order to become the success you have!

What if your member doesn't call you? How much should you “chase” a member? As has often been said in online marketing and online business opportunities ...success is for those who want it, not necessarily for those who need it. When a sponsor cares more about their own personal financial gain and success and ...not that of their member ...they are not helping anyone, let alone their own credibility!

Usually we wait for members to contact us and ask us for the help they need. As soon as you get a members contact information, go ahead and call them, introduce yourself, offer them your assistance. Once you offer, wait for that member to call you back, there is no need to chase them, let them do the chasing. If they are interested in what you have to offer ...they will call back!

As a good sponsor, you will instinctively know if your member(s) care about the assistance you are offering. Don't try to force the issue, be available when they need you!

If they want what you have, they will ask for your assistance and they will follow your lead. Members always do what they're taught to do, and will teach others the very same thing. Don't be overly zealous in pursuing a member or prospect who does not return phone calls or fails to do the work he or she has committed to do.

You may not be aware of their personal situations, be it home life, financial, health or otherwise. Be patient, be available and send them an email regularly just to say hello and advise them of what you're working on, when they're ready, you will have a good open door to assist them in their success!

Always remember, that you learned from others early on in your online marketing experience and had they not been there to help you, where would you be now? Help others, they WILL remember and return the favor when you need them later for a new venture or perhaps helping you assist others!
