While I served as a modifications agent for Website Pros, often our customers would express concern that they did not have the site traffic they hoped for. Besides suggesting PPC, I have three standard responses... add content, build links, and promote off line. Now that I'm in a corporate marketing seat, I see no more effective way to accomplish these rudimentary tasks then through the social media channels... Now how do we justify it to the investors and the board?

Time after time I found myself encouraging our clients with the following suggestions. Now as part of the marketing team, the same suggestions hold true for our corporation...

“On the Internet, information is a commodity. The more resources and information you provide for your site visitors the more valuable your site will be; in the eyes of the search engines and of your customers. If you continually add new content to your site you will be rewarded with a higher organic page rank and in turn, more site visitors and conversions.”

“We call it the World Wide Web for a reason. Cyberspace is a net of interconnected bits of information. The more links you can make on your site and more importantly to your site from other sites, the more relevant your site will be to the search engines. This generates more site traffic in two ways, from better search results as well as from the visitors of the external sites you’ve planted a link on. The more relevant your referring sites are, the stronger reliability score you will get from the search engines. It is a snowball effect, ideally your site will become such a resource for your industry that others will spontaneously begin to add links from their sites to yours.”

“Establishing a web presence is just the first step to achieving online success. Often it is the real world promotional tactics you employ that drive visitors to your site who otherwise wouldn’t be looking for you through search. Get creative, for suggestions read some of the articles in the marketing resource center on your website control panel. You will find ideas like, form partnerships and run promotions with other local business. And be sure to add your URL to your business card and flyers and pass them out to people whenever you get a chance.”

For a corporate wide initiate, taking a page from the Social Networking playbook would be resource intensive and man power heavy. Any investment made to apply the best practices we all know, as well as new practices that are proving to be valuable tools, will lead to prosperity for the company as well as the communities we serve.
