The April Fools was written by Bacharach/David for the film starring Catherine Deneuve and Jack Lemmon and sung in the film by Dionne Warwick. Scepter released the single in May 1969. Serene Dominic states, "Coming off Dionne's March 1969 Top 10 single "This Girl's In Love With You" , "The April Fools" should have reached more ears than its # 37 chart position indicates." The tune performed better in Canada where it peaked at # 34 on the charts. The tune is another haunting film recording by Dionne and "shoulda been a bigger hit." Dionne's exquisite phrasing has never been displayed better than this single. Aretha Franklin states this is her absolute favorite Dionne Warwick recording and she covered the tune in 1970 and also used Hal David's beautiful lyric in her wedding a few years later. The "B" side was also a film tune from "Slaves". Dionne Warwick starred in the film as Cassie, the beautiful mistress of evil plantation owner Stephen Boyd. Also in the cast were Ossie Davis and Gale Sondergaard. In the film, Warwick smothers her newborn child rather than allowing it to grow up in slavery. Dionne later kills Boyd and is aided in her escape by Ossie Davis. Dionne appeared nude in the 1969 film and was featured in an October 1969 Playboy Magazine feature on nudity in motion pictures.
